| 1992 August The Icicle Works THE BEST OF THE ICICLE WORKS Best Kept Secrets
Compilation Album (Beggars Banquet Records)
A compilation covering the recordings that The Icicle Works made for Beggars Banquet between 1983 and 1988. The first disc is a 'Best Of', while the second contains some b-sides, live versions, covers, rare tracks.
With individual song comments from McNabb, an appreciative essay, complete discography, and fine artwork, the Icicle Works collection provides an excellent overview of the group's heyday. If not quite as strong as the band's debut album as an experience due to the inclusion of less successful later numbers, all the hit singles and some fine album cuts appear, not to mention an interesting rarity or two. Beginning with the "long version" of the chiming drive of "Hollow Horse" from The Small Price Of A Bicycle, this collection fully showcases McNabb's passionate, elegant quaver and driving songwriting, as well as the abilities of the fine Layhe/Sharrock rhythm section. The three biggest hits get pride of place near the start: "Love Is a Wonderful Colour," "Birds Fly" (with wry comments from McNabb on its stateside re-titling as "Whisper to a Scream"), and "Understanding Jane." This last one appears in a 1992 version via remixing and extra overdubs by McNabb, but it's still a perfect blast of just-sly-enough pop/punk. He does a similar remix job with Small Price's gentler "When It All Comes Down," with equally fine results. "High Time," meanwhile, surfaces in its wonderful acoustic version from the "Kiss Off" single, while an otherwise unreleased track, the brooding, dramatic "Firepower," was recorded shortly before the original line-up collapsed.

1994 February 01 The Icicle Works BBC Live in Concert
LIVE Album (Windsong International)
There are three reasons to own the Icicle Works' BBC gig, and two of them were initially from the same LP. The studio versions of "Who Do You Want for Your Love?" and "Evangeline" can be heard on the band's 1987 LP, If You Want to Defeat Your Enemy Sing His Song, and the live renditions neither improve nor weaken the originals. Ian McNabb's voice loses none of its power in a concert setting; like Michael Been of the Call, McNabb's huge, booming vocals expand the sound of his band. It's easy to get swept by the romantic lyrics of "Who Do You Want for Your Love" and "Evangeline" because of McNabb's emotional fervor. The welcome addition of "Understanding Jane" increases the album's appeal, but overall the set list is disappointing. Why was "Little Girl Lost," from the Icicle Works' worst LP, Blind, performed, but not the anthemic "Hollow Horse" from The Small Price of a Bicycle? Casual fans will be upset by the exclusion of "Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)"; in fact, the Icicle Works' self-titled debut album is completely ignored -- there is no "In the Cauldron of Love" nor "Out of Season," two of the group's most memorable tunes. Even the U.K. Top 40 hit "Love Is a Wonderful Colour" is strangely absent. The other tracks here simply don't generate that kind of excitement. Clocking in at little more than 30 minutes, the title is misleading; this doesn't have the length or breadth of a real concert. For completists only. 2001 October 01 Ian McNabb WAIFS AND STRAYS
Compilation Album (Evangeline Records)
Waifs & Strays is the definitive cult item: a collection of peripheral material by a peripheral artist. This is Ian McNabb, the former Icicle Works frontman, clearing his attic--10 years' worth of demos, acoustic recordings and alternative versions of songs released elsewhere. Its release makes a certain amount of sense: to the extent that McNabb is known at all, it is for his somewhat incongruous collaborations with Crazy Horse and various members of the Waterboys. Waifs & Strays is McNabb on his own merits, with scarcely a celebrity cameo to be found, unless you count the recording of one track in the home studio of Pete Thomas .. who is, as McNabb's liner notes rather unnecessarily remind us, the drummer in Elvis Costello's Attractions. Though McNabb's small but determined audience ... this album's only likely audience ... will argue otherwise, the songs here, while occasionally affecting, are mostly a series of explanations for McNabb's relative obscurity. While he occasionally evokes the articulacy of a Costello or the world-weary languor of a Paul Westerberg ("Fire In My Soul" being a decent example of both), his writing and singing lack character, and there's not much argument in favour of listening to Waifs & Strays instead of any of the records that inspired it. Originally mastered by Tim Young at Metropolis. Distributed by Universal. 'Evangeline' is the label run by Andrew Lauder, formerly of This Way Up. | |||||||||

Notes
This is an album of previously unreleased archival material recorded between 1991 and 2000.
The title refers to both McNabb’s nickname (after his penchant for wearing Beatles-style boots in the mid-80s while with The Icicle Works), and a reference to the ‘official bootleg’ nature of the release.
The double disc set includes some very hard to find items, demos, and alternative versions. It was available by mail only and limited to 1,000 copies ... each numbered on the spine.

2008 November 17 The Icicle Works Lost Icicles [Volume 1]
Demos and Rarities (MP3 Download)
The way these tapes came back to me is bizarre. Mike Badger (founder of the La's) was having a cigarette outside a studio in Preston recently when he saw someone throwing a bunch of reel to reel tapes into a skip. Curiousity got the better of him and he leaned over to have a look. They turned out to be a bunch of Icicle Works tapes that we'd all forgotten about. He grabbed them and passed them on to my guitar doctor Belgian John. I then went to retrieve them and was frankly amazed at what I saw. A full concert from Boston 1984 and about thirty other unreleased tracks. I was stunned to see the original masters of 'Are We Dreamers' and 'Irish Soldiers', recorded at Rock City in Shepperton studios, intended to be our debut single but shelved when we fell out with Scratch records who paid for them. A bunch of songs I'd forgotten about: 'Clockmaker', 'All Is Right' amongst them, and loads of embryonic demos that would eventually become songs on our first and second albums. The demo of'Love Is A Wonderful Colour' with completely different lyrics. I was gobsmacked. I've included 18 tracks on 'Lost Icicles Vol 1' and it makes for a very interesting listen for any Icicles fan (of which I include myself).

| 2011 July 11 The Icicle Works BLIND 3CD Reissue, Remastered STUDIO Album Cherry Red Records CDTRED 501 As early as the Icicle Works' second album, it became obvious that singer/songwriter Ian McNabb had little interest in further pursuing his career as a new wave tunesmith in the manner of his only U.K. hit, Love Is a Wonderful Colour . Still, stylistic nods to Neil Young, Van Morrison, and Motown on post-1984 recordings could have hardly prepared the casual Icicle Works fan for the all-over-the-map musical journey that represented the original line up's fourth and final album, Blind. There's not even a hint of new wave on this record; beginning with a full-on Led Zeppelin-style rave up ( Shit Creek ), Blind then proceeds to careen wildly through several anthemic folk-rockers ( Here Comes Trouble , Starry Blue Eyed Wonder ), a Caribbean-style pop tune ( What Do You Want Me to Do ), a Prince-meets-INXS lite-funk workout ( The KissOff ), a raunchy blues-metal parody that even Zodiac Mindwarp might have found too over the top ( Two Two Three ), Blind contains some of the Icicle Works' best individual tracks, including the singles High Time and Little Girl Lost . This 3-CD reissue-set contains 2 discs of rare and unreleased material in addition to the original album and also features updated booklets and notes by Classic Rocks Jerry Ewing. This re-issue is presented with the US Cover, as opposed to the original UK cover. The tracks are however, the UK versions, and NOT the radically remastered US versions, which still remain elusive other than on the original US release. 3CD Reissue - Cherry Red Records CDTRED 501 Disc 1 - Original Album

Ian McNabb
HEAD LIKE A ROCK
Reissue STUDIO Album2CD - Cherry Red Records CDBRED 552
Icicle Works fans, be forewarned: Ian McNabb's solo album, Head Like a Rock, barely resembles the anthemic new wave pop of his former band. Indie purists may scoff, but Head Like a Rock is a heartfelt, invigorating rock album. Collaborating with members of Neil Young's Crazy Horse, McNabb sounds rejuvenated. On "Fire Inside My Soul," McNabb cuts loose both musically and emotionally. While his passionate, robust vocals ride atop screeching guitars, McNabb sings autobiographical lyrics about leaving the past behind, including the death of his father. Clocking in at over eight minutes, the song sets the tone for the LP; it is uplifting, energetic music. The ferocious rhythm section of Crazy Horse blends smoothly with McNabb's deep, booming voice. The crunchy guitar riffs in "Fire Inside My Soul" and "You Must Be Prepared to Dream" may turn off Icicle Works devotees, however, the hooks are sharp enough to slice away any hesitancy. McNabb and his cohorts slow the tempo on "Child Inside a Father" and "Still Got the Fever," but the feelings of restlessness still linger. On Head Like a Rock, McNabb takes inventory of his life and discovers that, despite a few setbacks, everything is fine. It's a realization that bursts like firecrackers.
